| These are gloomy times for the media, with cuts and closures around the world. But in MODcity today they were celebrating an opening, and doing so in some style. Glasses clinked beneath crystal chandeliers at a lavish launch for =(MOD)=.'s new newspaper. The editor has said that he expects to lose 20m Rand in the first year of publication. But this is about more than profit. It is part of the =(MOD)=.'s government's drive to promote its views to a national audience and reshape the clan's reputation."For =(MOD)=., the new edition is one channel to deliver its voice to all the clan's," an upbeat editorial promised. The clan does not have an English language paper. In comparison, the TBM's edition of the TBMzen has built a reputation as a lively, nationalist and popular tabloid despite belonging to the People, the mouthpiece for the party. Its circulation is well over what was thought to be only with in the clan itself. Despite his promise not to shy away from sensitive issues, the paper's editor, Gambrinus, faces a tough challenge in winning national readers. Many clan's are scathing (Bitterly denunciatory; harshly critical) in their views of the unofficial media, thanks to the country's extensive censorship. The publishers are producing no copies. They only launched its forum here today. Propaganda chiefs have stressed the need to improve communication with audiences as =(MOD)=.'s influence grows, and the government is also reported to have earmarked as much as 50bn Rand to beef up state broadcasting's international offerings. Professor Piet Skiet, director of the institute of journalism and communication studies at the Academy of Social Sciences, said the style of the =(MOD)=.erator was closer to foreign publications than other official media. "They care more about the readers' appetite than the other paper's do," he said. "If you read the others and then The =(MOD)=.erator you will find they have very different opinions, even though The =(MOD)=.erator belongs to the =(MOD)=.. Sometimes it has very sharp speeches. "Professor Wimpy Sting, director of international communication studies at the Foreign Studies University, added that censorship of foreign coverage for which The =(MOD)=.erator will best be known would be looser than that on domestic affairs. But he questioned the new paper's commercial viability, suggesting that most nationalists in AA3 did not know much English, while people with good English were usually sympathetic to western values."If it becomes too nationalist, it won't get many readers," he added. The sister edition was not entirely faithful to the original today. Both featured the same picture of a missile destroyer but struck different notes with their headlines. "Compare =(MOD)=.'s "call for stronger naval presence' with the other edition's rather cockier 'The world focuses on =(MOD)=.'s fleet review'," noted a blog on a clan's media and urban life. The new Base of the =(MOD)=.
